Turkish jets shot down a Russian military aircraft near the border between Turkey and Syria. The warplane has crashed in the Yamadi village, in the Syrian province of Latakia, and, according to unconfirmed reports, two Russian pilots are missing, presumed dead.
Turkish military officials say that their F-16s shot down the Russian plane Su-24 after repeatedly warning Russian pilots that they are in violation of Turkish airspace. Turkey asserts that the warplane of unknown origin violated their airspace in Hatay province and was warned by Turkish pilots at least ten times in five minutes. The Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey Numan Kurtulmus said that their aircraft on patrol mission operated within the rules of engagement. But the Russian Defense Ministry initially claimed that an Su-24 bomber crashed in Syrian territory after being hit by fire from the ground. Moscow also denied the information that the jet violated Turkish airspace and added that it can prove that its plane has not left Syrian airspace.
